Your guide to the Arkansas Valley Whitewater Events in 2026
The Arkansas River Valley is the beating heart of Colorado whitewater, and the stretch between Buena Vista and Salida hosts some of the most iconic paddling festivals in the country every summer. Whether you’re a competitor, spectator, or just looking for an excuse to plan a river trip, here are the must-attend whitewater events lining up for summer 2026.
CKS Paddlefest

Dates: May 21–25, 2026 (Memorial Day Weekend)
Location: Buena Vista River Park, 426 E Main St, Buena Vista, CO
Memorial Day weekend kicks off the Colorado paddling season with CKS Paddlefest, the hands-on, river-soaked celebration hosted by Colorado Kayak Supply. Expect five days of pro freestyle rodeos at the South Main River Park, the legendary Pine Creek Giant Slalom, river surf demos and clinics with the pros, gear demos from top paddling brands, the Spirit Trail Run (8K, half, and full marathon) on May 24th, plus live music and local brews flowing through downtown BV all weekend. It’s the unofficial start to summer in Chaffee County and benefits the Friends of the Buena Vista River Park.
FIBArk Whitewater Festival

Dates: June 18–21, 2026
Location: Riverside Park, Salida, CO
FIBArk 2026 — short for “First in Boating on the Arkansas” — is America’s oldest and boldest whitewater festival, running annually since 1949. The four-day Salida tradition is also a USA Canoe/Kayak designated Southwest Regional Team Qualifier, drawing elite paddlers from across the country. Highlights include the downriver race, freestyle kayak competitions, the famously chaotic Hooligan Race (where homemade craft attempt to survive the rapids), live music, a parade, a carnival, and an entire downtown takeover along the Arkansas. Peak early-season runoff means big, exciting flows and Salida at its summer best.
Arkansas River Weekend (Colorado Whitewater)

Dates: July 10–12, 2026
Location: Paul’s Lot, Buena Vista River Park, CO
Hosted by Colorado Whitewater, Arkansas River Weekend is a three-day club paddling gathering with guided river cruises, riverside camping at Paul’s Lot in downtown BV, and a community vibe built around getting on the water with experienced paddlers. It’s especially friendly for intermediate kayakers looking to step up their game and meet others in the Colorado paddling community. Registration is required and non-refundable, and the event leans on volunteer trip leaders and sweeps.
BV Pro Whitewater Festival
Dates: July 2026 (specific dates TBA — check the Buena Vista events calendar closer to summer)
Location: Buena Vista Whitewater Park / South Main, Buena Vista, CO
The BV Pro showcases elite freestyle kayakers throwing big tricks at the South Main play wave in downtown Buena Vista. It’s one of the most spectator-friendly events of the summer — you can literally watch world-class paddling from the riverbank with a coffee or a beer in hand. The event celebrates whitewater culture, is walkable from rafting take-outs and downtown lodging, and is a fantastic gateway for first-timers who get inspired to book their own river trip.
Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival

Dates: July 17–18, 2026
Location: Centennial Park, Cañon City, CO (downstream of Salida on the Arkansas)
Just a short drive down the Arkansas from Salida, the 17th annual Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival draws more than 18,000 attendees and packs a wild two days into riverside Centennial Park. The lineup includes kayak, SUP, raft, and river-board competitions, races through the Royal Gorge itself (check-in at Garcia Beach, 15 miles west of Cañon City), trail running and mountain biking events, a vibrant vendor marketplace, live music, family splash pads and kids’ zones, and — yes — the famous Wiener Dog Races. It’s a perfect cap to a midsummer rafting weekend on the Arkansas.
Planning Your Visit
Summer flows on the Arkansas typically peak in early-to-mid June and settle into reliable, family-friendly levels of 700–1,200 CFS through July and August thanks to supplemental releases. That means whether you’re chasing big-water thrills at FIBArk or splashy family fun around the Royal Gorge Festival, there’s a weekend that fits your style. Book lodging early — Memorial Day weekend, FIBArk, and the mid-July festivals all fill up fast across Buena Vista, Salida, and Cañon City.
See you on the river.
